Lesnar in Royal Rumble Match | Wrestling News Update, January 7th 2019

BROCK LESNAR TO ENTER ROYAL RUMBLE

WWE Champion Brock Lesnar will be a part of this year’s men’s Royal Rumble.

As announced on last night’s RAW by Paul Heyman, he will also be entering the match first overall. Heyman said that Lesnar told him there’s no one on Raw, SmackDown, or NXT that is man enough or worthy enough to challenge for his title at the Royal Rumble, so he is entering the Rumble match itself.

The stipulation of the Royal Rumble is that they face the champion of his or her choosing, so who knows what could be in store if Lesnar were to be the last man standing.

BIG SHOW RETURNS TO WWE

After a two- year absence, former world champion The Big Show returning to a WWE ring.

He was the mystery tag team partner of Samoa Joe and Kevin Owens, who faced AOP and Seth Rollins. His team picked up the disqualification win after Seth Rollins hit Show with a chair, but Show had the last laugh by dropping Rollins with his knockout punch.

Big Show hadn’t been on WWE television since November 2018. He was briefly involved with Sheamus and Cesaro on the SmackDown brand with the alliance ended in a backstage segment.

FOUR MATCHES OFFICIAL FOR NEXT WEEKS RAW

Speaking of Big Show, he will be a part of a rather unique match on next weeks RAW. Alongside three other matches announced, Vic Joseph confirmed at the end of last night’s broadcast that Big Show, Samoa Joe and Kevin Owens will face Seth Rollins and A.O.P in a ‘Fist Fight’ match. There was no allusion to what the stipulations are in this contest.

In addition, AJ Styles vs Randy Orton was announced for next Monday. These two have been back-and-forth for a few weeks after Orton cost Styles his United States Championship against Rey Mysterio.

We will also see Aleister Black and Buddy Murphy continue their rivalry. Murphy attacked Black following his match with Shelton Benjamin last night, knee a chair into Black’s face.

We also will be Bobby Lashley and Rusev finally face-off, after Rusev ruined Lashley and Lana’s wedding. Lana will be in Lashley’s corner, and Liv Morgan announced that she will be in Rusev’s.

MANABU NAKANISHI RETIRING NEXT MONTH

During a post Wrestle Kingdom 14 press conference, New Japan Pro Wrestling stalwart Manabu Nakanishi announced that he will be retiring next month.

He will be finishing his career on February 22nd at a special retirement event at Korakuen Hall. Nakanishi noted that although his contract will come due at the end of January, NJPW will extend the contract through the retirement event.

Nakanishi also noted that he had suffered a neck injury years ago and continued to wrestle afterwards, but couldn’t wrestle to the full extent that he wanted to.

Nakanishi started his career in October of 1992,  graduating from New Japan’s dojo. he wrestled for WCW under the name ‘Kurosawa’ for a year. He is a former G1 Climax winner and IWGP Heavyweight Champion.

NJPW/CMLL FANTASTICAMANIA 2020 CARDS ANNOUNCED

NJPW has released full cards for their annual joint CMLL tour, Fantastica Mania.

The tour will start this Friday in the Osaka Prefectural Gym, streamed live on NJPW World. After spot shows in Ehime, Kyoto and Aichi, the final four nights of the tour will be broadcast live from Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall on January 16th, 17th, 19th and 20th.

AEW HEADING TO TWO NEW CITIES

All Elite Wrestling announced two new locations for their upcoming episodes of AEW Dynamite.

They will take place in Denver, Colorado at the 1stBank Center on March 4th.

Then the following week the show will take place in Salt Lake City, Utah at the Maverik Center on March 11th.

BIG MATCH MADE FOR TOMORROW’S DYNAMITE

On tomorrow’s episode of AEW Dynamite, the Jurassic Express trio of Jungle Boy, Marko Stunt and Luchasaurus will face Best Friends (Chuck Taylor & Trent) and Orange Cassidy.

Tomorrow’s Dynamite will take place at the Landers Centre in Southaven, Mississippi.

JEFF COBB WORKING WITH ROH ON PER-SHOW BASIS; CONFIRMED FOR BLOODSPORT III

Pro Wrestling Sheet has reported that Jeff Cobb will remain with Ring of Honor, but not on a long-term deal.

The former Television champions deal with ROH was up on January 1st and he chose not to sign an exclusive multi-year contract with the promotion but on a per-show basis instead.

He is booked for ROH’s return to Center Stage in Atlanta Saturday in a three-way tag match, and will challenge for the ROH Tag Team Titles alongside Dan Maff on February 9th.

In addition, GCW announced Cobb as the first confirmed participant for Josh Barnett’s ‘Bloodsport III’, taking place on Thursday of WrestleMania weekend in Tampa, Florida in The Cuban Club.

ANDREWS VS DRAGUNOV AT CHAPTER 101

Another huge match has been made for the first PROGRESS Chapter in the post-Jim Smallman era.

At Chapter 101: Dalmatians, Mark Andrews will be facing Ilja Dragunov. Dragunov will be looking to bounce back after coming up short in his two-out-of-three falls match against Cara Noir, whilst Mandrews is in blistering form, undefeated since his shocking return to help Eddie Dennis capture the PROGRESS Unified Title.

Chapter 101 will take place in the Electric Ballroom in Camden, London on 19th January, 2019.

DDT UNIVERSAL CHAMPIONSHIP ANNOUNCED

Earlier this week, DDT announced a new championship would be created in the form of the Universal Championship.

On February 23rd in Korakuen Hall, Chris Brookes will face Konosuke Takeshita for the newly minted championship. Brookes will be based in Japan for the majority of 2020 following a series of tours with DDT in 2019.
