5 Things We Learned

5 Things We Learned From SmackDown Live (21st May, 2019)

Jack Dinsley gives us five things we learned from last night’s SmackDown Live!

As we head past Money In The Bank, we look forward to see what is next for the Blue brand.

New challengers and new rivalries all came to the forefront with a shocking attack on the WWE Champion, R-Truth continued his life on the run as 24/7 Champion and we learned more about everyone’s favourite pay-per-view, Super Showdown.

But what did we learn? Let’s find out.

1. Ziggler in, Owens out?

After Kofi Kingston was able to retain the WWE Championship against Kevin Owens at the Money in the Bank PPV, everyone (including me) thought they would keep their rivalry going. According to sources, Owens may not be traveling to Saudi Arabia for the Super Showdown, therefore, Kofi had to find a new rival. Out of nowhere, it turned out to be Dolph Ziggler.

This rivalry could be very interesting because both superstars have been deemed underrated in their professional wrestling careers. It could also be the boost that Ziggler has been waiting for, since he’s not had a lot to do in the past couple of years. How exciting.

2. Big E Is Back And The New Day Are Better Than Ever

Following an injury to Big E which side-lined him from competing for weeks, he’s finally back. You can’t possibly have the stable without Big E. There was a lot of speculation that after WrestleMania, he would turn on both Kingston and Woods, and feud for the WWE Championship.

Due to his injury the speculation turned out to be false. Following the rivalry with Ziggler could we finally see this storyline? I for one would be very interested to see how WWE would showcase this story arc, and it would be good because it would see The New Day in the main event.

3. The Chase is On For the 24/7 Champion

After Hall of Famer Mick Foley announced the new 24/7 Championship on Raw, it’s been the main topic of conversation on social media, not necessarily all good. However, for the WWE superstars it has given them the chance to hold some gold. Already we have seen Titus O’Neil and Robert Roode hold the Championship. R-Truth is still the champion after being chased on SmackDown by several different wrestlers including the B-Team, The Brian Kendrick and Matt Hardy.

However, Truth needs to be careful – just like the Hardcore Championship, women could also hold the title. How long will it be until Carmella betrays Truth for gold?

4. Charlotte Is Still The Queen

Love or hate Charlotte, she is the Queen. I might be being biased here (I love her) but after losing her ninth championship to Bayley, you would think they would rest her. No, it seems like they are carrying on the Becky Lynch and Lacey Evans feud, and Bayley is now feuding with Charlotte.

Personally, I am not complaining but I think Charlotte could do well in a non-championship feud, such as one with Liv Morgan, Mandy Rose, Sonya Deville or Carmella. Let Ember Moon feud for the SmackDown Live Women’s Championship for a while.

For now, let’s enjoy Charlotte’s feud with Bayley and who knows? We could see a tenth reign under the Queen.

5. A New Intercontinental Champion On The Horizon?

Ever since Andrade has come to the main roster from NXT, he’s been underrated and underutilised. Then do you remember when he was moved to Raw in the Superstar Shakeup? No? If you can’t remember, I don’t blame you because they just ignored it completely. Raw could have brought new opportunities.

His next PPV match is against Finn Balor for the Intercontinental Championship, which is going to be an epic match between the two. They are both amazing athletes, and after his performance at the Money in the Bank PPV and his match against Ali on SmackDown Live, we could be seeing a new champion in the not so distant future.

Andrade’s match against Ali was actually a great contest, and this could be a good rivalry if he wins the championship off Finn Balor.
