TWO TITLE MATCHES AND A BIG GRUDGE NUMBER ONE CONTENDERS MATCH HEADLINE TONIGHT’S DYNAMITE
Wednesday night Dynamite opened with a reminder that we are two weeks away from night one of Fyter Fest which is free this year. Jake Hager will face the winner of the Cody Rhodes v Mystery Opponent for the TNT title at Fyter Fest.
Kenny Omega and Hangman Page defeated the Natural Nightmares via pinfall (Last Call) to retain the AEW Tag Team Championship.
Brandi Rhodes accompanied QT Marshall and Dustin Rhodes, the Natural Nightmares to the ring to challenge Kenny Omega and Hangman Page for the AEW Tag Team titles.
Dustin Rhodes and Kenny Omega got the action started in the title match. The match was even early on in the match. After a knee to the head of Omega, Page and QT Marshall were tagged in to continue the action.
Page began delivering chops across the chest and back but Marshall was able to land a drop kick to stay in the match. After a kick to the face of Marshall a tag was made to bring in Omega.
Dustin Rhodes scored a two count on Omega and after Marshall was tagged in he also scored consecutive two counts on Omega. The challengers were able to keep Omega isolated and away from being able to tag his partner.
Omega finding a second wind landing a series of blows followed an elbow to the face and a crusher to Rhodes. Omega is able to tag in Page who disposes of both Rhodes and Marshall. Page is able to land a sliding lariat for a two count on Marshall.
The champions tooks a page from the book of the Natural Nightmares and isolate Marshall away from Rhodes. Page delivered a kick to the face of Rhodes who was in his corner awaiting a tag. Marshall was able to deliver a kick to the face of Hangman Page. Both teams tag and Rhodes and Omega go to work.
Rhodes climbis to the top rope and takes out both Omega and Page once inside the ring and once while the champions were outside the ring. QT Marshall lands an elbow from the top rope on Omega. Marshall lands a Diamond Cutter after a second attempt.
Allie came to the ring to motivate Marshall and the plan backfires as he misses from the top rope. Page and Omega have Marshall isolated in the ring and score a two count after Rhodes breaks up the count. A Last Call from Page and Omega results in a pinfall and the champions retain the title.
As a result of the victory Kenny Omega and Hangman Adam Page will face the winners of the number one contender’s match later tonight.
After the break we get an introduction to Anna Jay. She says she wants to put on a show for the fans and be the star of the show.
Abadon defeats Anna Jay via pinfall
Abadon crawled down the ramp and into the ring. Abadon begins the match with a double leg take down followed by a fury of fists to the face of Anna Jay. Abadon takes control early in the match with a vicious clothesline followed by a take down and pinfall in near record time.
After the match Brodie Lee and the Dark Order enter the ring. Evil Uno present an envelope to Colt Cabana who takes out the contents and appears to read it. Meanwhile the Dark Order help Anna Jay out of the ring. Excalibur and Tony Schiavone speculate that the contents of the envelope may be an offer from the Dark Order to Colt Cabana.
MJF defeats Billy Gunn via pinfall (diamond ring right)
MJF is escorted to the ring by Wardlow. Billy Gunn is escorted by Austin and Colten, the remainder of the Gunn Club, to the ring to face MJF.
MJF leaves the ring to start the match. Billy is able to utilize his size and strength advantage early in the match. Gunn lands with a kick to the face of MJF as Billy maintains control of the match. MJF leaves the ring and walks up the ramp telling the referee that he is done. Billy Gunn goes in the tunnel and carries MJF back to the ring.
MJF is able to gain some momentum by taking out Billy Gunn’s knee in a series of moves to the lower legs of Gunn. While the referee is distracted Wardlow repeatedly throws Gunn’s damaged knee into the ring post. As both MJF and Gunn enter the ring MJF continues to work the injured knee of his opponent.
Billy Gunn is able to rally and deliver a pair of right hands to the face of MJF. Billy’s injured knee prevents him from moving well enough to capitalize on his brief momentum gain. Billy had MJF pinned but Wardlow distracted the referee. Billy delivers a right hand to the face of Wardlow but not before he is able to throw the diamond ring to MJF. Wardlow attacks Austin Gunn outside the ring and is then thrown through the barricade by Billy Gunn. As Billy re-enters the ring MJF delivers the knockout punch using the diamond ring to claim victory.
After the match Jungle Boy confronts MJF and Wardlow and Luchasaurus with Marko stunt engage in a brawl. The AEW roster that is on hand to watch the show intervene to try and break up the rumble.
Alex Marvez speaks with Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara. When asked why the beat down of Orange Cassidy, Jericho responds with “simple answer, you got a fat head Marvez.” Then Jericho goes on to describe the real reason is because he had the “audacity” to interrupt the Inner Circle. Jericho concludes with blood is thicker than orange juice.
Brett Baker and Tony Schiavone announce that at Fyter Fest the AEW women’s world champion Hikaru Shida will defend the title against Penelope Ford. The good doctor is furious that Schiavone isn’t there to interview her. She asks to leave only to find out that her driver is Big Swole. Dr. Baker is driven away by Big Swole to parts unknown.
Cody Rhodes defeats Ricky Starks via pinfall (Cross Rhodes)
Cody Rhodes came to the ring, escorted by Arn Anderson to announce the identity of his mystery opponent for the TNT championship. His opponent turned out to be Ricky Starks, who was making his AEW debut in a championship match tonight.
Rhodes takes control early over the over matched Starks. Jake Hager was watching the match on a monitor backstage. A drop kick by Rhodes staggers Starks. The challenger rolls out of the ring to regain his composure only to have Cody Rhodes dive out of the ring and take him out.
After a kick to the face by Rhodes, Starks is able to counter with a leg drop and a one count. Arn Anderson moves Rhodes out of the way of a Starks attack. Starks is able to deliver a DDT to Rhodes and score a two count. An elbow to the head seems to daze Rhodes. After a whip to the corner Starks and the champion crack heads with each other.
After a powerslam by Rhodes he is able to score a two count on the challenger. Rhodes jumped to the top rope with Starks following him. Starks is able to deliver a suplex from the top rope. Rhodes and Starks engage in a boxing match before Starks delivers a spear for a two count. Both men trade two counts several times before Rhodes catches Starks with a Cross Rhodes for the victory.
The Young Bucks defeat SuperBad Squad via pinfall
The SuperBad Squad of Kip Sabian and Jimmy Havoc made their way to the ring with Penelope Ford to face The Young Bucks in tag team action. Jimmy Havoc goes after the injured ribs of Matt Jackson. Nick Jackson and Kip Sabian tag in only to have The Young Bucks display great teamwork to regain control of the match. The Butcher and The Blade taunt the Bucks from ringside.
Kip Sabian runs face first into the fist of Nick Jackson while trying to mount a sneak attack on The Young Bucks. Matt Jackson scores a flipping neck breaker to Havoc. Butcher and The Blade distract the referee which allows Havoc to assault Matt Jackson with a plastic “caution” sign and Havoc lands a two count.
Sabian and Havoc isolate Matt Jackson in the corner and continue to punish him while taunting Nick Jackson. Havoc chokes Matt Jackson with a towel before driving him back into the corner for more abuse at the hands of the SuperBad Squad. Havoc throws Matt Jackson out of the ring. Butcher and the Blade were going on the way to Matt Jackson when FTR showed up and prevented the altercation.
Matt Jackson is able to deliver a powerbomb from the top rope and then make a tag to his brother. Nick Jackson clears the ring of SuperBad Squad and puts a sharpshooter to Kip Sabian. An elbow to the spine of Sabian from the top rope by Matt Jackson appears to give control to the Bucks. Havoc distracts the referee and Penelope Ford enters the ring and strikes Nick Jackson with the plastic caution sign.
A DDT by Sabian results in a two count on Nick Jackson. Two Northern Lights suplexes allows The Young Bucks to regain momentum. Sabian with a double foot drop from the top rope ends with a two count. A superkick party to both members of SuperBad Squad leads to Sabian delivering a tombstone to Havoc and then a a pair of knees to Sabian results in a pinfall victory for The Young Bucks.
After the match a brawl ensues between FTR, Butcher and the Blade, The Young Bucks and SuperBad Squad. It appears as though FTR and the Bucks have formed an fragile alliance here tonight.
Taz addresses the incident last week between Brian Cage and Jon Moxley. Cage says that Moxley “brought this on himself.” Cage finishes with a throat slash and a declaration that no one is better than him.
After a commercial break Mox addresses Brian Cage. The judge, jury, and executioner, the man who makes heads roll is how Moxley refers to himself. He says he in this business because he has demons. He challenges Cage to “beat me if you can.”
We learned that the envelope delivered from the Dark Order to Colt Cabana was a contract for Brodie Lee to team with Colt Cabana to take on Joey Janela and Sonny Kiss. The match between Cody Rhodes and Jake Hager at Fyter Fest for the TNT championship was confirmed tonight.Britt Baker was found in a dumpster presumably dumped there by Big Swole.
Best Friends defeat Le Sex Gods via pinfall (reverse pile driver)
Matt Hardy showed up to do commentary for the number one contender’s match between Le Sex Gods and Best Friends. The team that wins this match will face Kenny Omega and Hangman Adam Page for the AEW Tag Team championship at Fyter Fest.
Chuck Taylor attacks Chris Jericho outside the ring while Sammy and Trent also mixing it up with Sammy Guevara. Best Friends seeking revenge for the attack on Orange Cassidy last week on Dynamite.
Trent delivers a massive spear to Guevara outside the ring. Chuckie forces Sammy back into the ring where Trent scores a two count. Jericho and Chuck T are tagged in and continue the action. Jericho is able to score a two count before Chuck T kicks out.
Sammy displays his athleticism with a dropkick to Chuck Taylor. A tag to Jericho allows Le Sex Gods to maintain control of the match by denying Taylor an opportunity to tag. Jericho scores another two count on Chuck Taylor. Jericho misses with a back flip off the top rope which allows a tag to Trent. Sammy is in trouble as Trent delivers chops and an elbow to the throat of Sammy Guevara. Trent knocks Jericho down to the floor with a flying elbow to Chris Jericho.
Trent lands a suplex to Sammy and then jumps out of the ring to confront Jericho who is able to counter with a shot to the ribs of Trent using his bat. Jericho and Trent return to the ring where Jericho throws Trent off the ropes and collects a two count. A double shoulder tackle from Guevara and Jericho staggers Trent. Sammy now the legal man runs into a double kick to the chest of Guevara.
Chuck Taylor knocks Jericho off the side of the ring and lands a two count with the falcon arrow. Taylor attempts a moonsault from the top rope. Guevara avoids it but runs into a powerbomb resulting in a two count after Jericho interferes.
Before Best Friends can hug Jericho enters the ring and attacks both men. A knee strike by Trent knocks Jericho down. Jericho applies the lion tamer as Sammy Guevara goes over the top rope to take out Chuck Taylor. Trent is able to reach the rope and break the hold.
Chuck Taylor holds Trent on his shoulder as they retreive Sammy Guevara from the top rope and land an assisted superplex. Jericho interrupts the two count. Sammy responds with a two count of his own. Taylor and Jericho battle outside the ring. With the referee distracted Sammy delivers a shot to the ribs of Trent using the bat. Sammy then climbs the rope and lands a shooting star that results in a two count. Sammy trips over the camera cord which allows Trent to gain the upper hand. Trent lands a reverse pile driver for the victory and a title shot at Fyter Fest.
After the match the camera man enters the ring to reveal his identity as Orange Cassidy. Cassidy then delivers a pair of spears to Jericho and finishes with a superman punch.
We close with Orange Cassidy and The Best Friends hugging, as Cassidy vs Jericho for Fyter Fest is announced.
