AEW Fyter Fest Predictions – Night One

In a parallel universe, we would be about to witness Fyter Fest in London this weekend. However, due to understandable circumstances, Fyter Fest 2020 will emanate from Daily’s Place in Jacksonville. The two-week event will start on Wednesday 1st July and culminate a week later on the 8th. With Le Champion Chris Jericho on commentary and three out of four titles being defended, Night One is set up to be a fantastic show. With that being said, here are my predictions for Fyter Fest Night One.

MJF & Wardlow vs Luchasaurus & Jungle Boy
Prediction = Luchasaurus & Jungle Boy

This is a matchup that has been brewing for a while within AEW. It’s a rivalry birthed at Double or Nothing in May when MJF and Jungle Boy had an excellent match which saw MJF get the initial win. On the following AEW Dynamite however, it was Jungle Boy who got the better of MJF by eliminating him last in a TNT Championship Number One Contenders Battle Royal. The tide turned in MJF and Wardlow’s favour when the colossal Wardlow took on fellow behemoth Luchasaurus in a battle of the big boys this past week on AEW Dynamite; Wardlow got the win here in a rather nefarious manner.

Due to the fact MJF and Wardlow are 2-1 in this feud I believe this foreshadows a Luchasaurus and Jungle Boy victory. With Wardlow being in the matchup, it means he can eat the pinfall enabling MJF to keep his record clean. The win is a much-needed one for Luchasaurus and Jungle Boy too as they have not had a real credible victory yet and I believe this can be just that. I also believe with this loss it could lead to an MJF and Wardlow split up, something that has been teased on past shows.

Private Party (w/ Matt Hardy) vs Santana & Ortiz
Prediction = Private Party

On this past weeks AEW Dynamite we saw Matt Hardy get the better of Santana and despite this, I believe it will be Proud and Powerful on the wrong end of victory again. We have recently been introduced to this new relationship between Private Party and Matt Hardy; the “Hardy Party”. I believe due to this new relationship, it will be Private Party scoring the win as to give them a defeat would be counterproductive. I am also of the opinion that Private Party are due a much-needed win – since the turn of the year they have not won a tag match on AEW Dynamite or a PPV, with their only victories coming on AEW Dark.

AEW Women’s World Title Match
Hikaru Shida vs Penelope Ford
Prediction = Hikaru Shida

This will be Hikaru Shida’s first title defence since her hard-fought victory against Nyla Rose at Double or Nothing. Having gone from Nyla Rose to Penelope Ford is a nice dichotomy in trying to show Shida can take on all comers no matter how big or agile. It is a testament to the spread of unique talent within the Women’s roster that they are all able to display a wide array of performers. Maybe not being the first name to come to mind when thinking of the Women’s division, Penelope Ford has definitely earned this opportunity. From stepping up to the plate when Britt Baker got unfortunately injured to her amazing ringside work with Kip Sabian to winning a Fatal-4-Way matchup in a great showing, she has consistently improved week in week out.

Despite this, I do believe it will be Hikaru Shida winning here. She is just getting the ball rolling on her title reign and this would not be the time nor place for that reign to stop. Penelope Ford will look fine in defeat too as her step up from Kip Sabian’s fiancé to title contender boosts her value immensely regardless of the result. I believe this will be a really solid match and keep up the trend of really well-performed women’s matches within AEW. A trend that has become more and more noticeable over the past months.

AEW World Tag Team Titles
Kenny Omega & Adam Page vs Best Friends
Prediction = Kenny Omega & Adam Page

Like the last match on these predictions, I think this is quite the obvious result with Kenny Omega and Adam Page retaining. They have had two matches together, not including the Stadium Stampede, since the empty arena shows started and I think this match against Best Friends will just put the back on the map as the AEW World Tag Team Champions. Not that they need too as such but I think a PPV win will just help initiate the storyline surrounding these two again, something which was the best storyline a few months ago.

This, similarly to Penelope Ford, is a much-deserved title shot for Best Friends who have worked tirelessly these past few months during these empty arena shows. Further proving they are deserving of this match, they put their contendership on the line in a match against Le Sex Gods, which they won. Best Friends are undefeated since April in tag team matches and have been built up well alongside Orange Cassidy, getting over with many of the fans. Though I do not think this is their time right now to win the AEW World Tag Team Titles, I do believe there will come a time when they possess those Championships.

I am hoping we get to see more storyline progression between Adam Page and Kenny Omega but regardless this should be a fantastic matchup of two tag teams at the top of their game.

Cody vs Jake Hager – TNT Title Match
Prediction = Cody

This is the matchup that I believe will main event Night One of Fyter Fest. A matchup that pits Cody, in his first PPV defence, against Jake Hager in his first singles match since his No Holds Barred match against Moxley. Much like that aforementioned match, I see Jake Hager losing here.

On recent episodes of Dynamite, Cody has been putting over this idea of a weekly title defence. I think there is so much character and storyline progression available for Cody and his opponents in this format, so I don’t think they should be ending Cody’s journey as champion just yet. Much like Hikaru Shida, having Cody up against Hager proves he is capable of taking on all shapes and sizes thus making him a credible champion; from facing the agile Jungle Boy, Ricky Starks and Marq Quen to then facing the brutish offence of Lance Archer and now Hager.

Despite only being on the right side of victory once since his loss to Moxley, I don’t think Hager will look weak in defeat. Firstly, being associated with The Inner Circle and Chris Jericho keeps him safe and keeps him strong within the card anyway but also just his physical presence alone is hard to deny no matter if winning or losing. I think he will be able to put on a great match against Cody and hopeful better his, somewhat anti-climatic, match against Moxley.
