John Morrison, Johnny Nitro, Johnny Blaze, Johnny Spade, Johnny Superstar, Nitro, Boone, Mundo…
…John Hennigan, Johnny Onyx, Johnny Impact, Johnny Religion, Johnny Blackcraft, Johnny Raw, Johnny 205 Live – call him what you will, the man who has had more names than many of us have had hot dinners looks like he might be heading back to WWE.
Mind you, even that is hotly debated and if he’s as decisive as he seems with his names, then who knows what the future holds. In fact, I once asked him if he was indecisive and he wasn’t sure.
Although there’s no immediate indication of which brand he will be placed on should he be returning, it is always fun to speculate. Here’s five feuds that I think would really help John Morrison excel.
5. Finn Bálor
Both men have history with the Intercontinental belt. Morrison is a three-time champion with the Intercontinental title, so to put him against a very recent champ would make ample sense to me. Although the former Impact World Champion is closer to 50 than 21, he can certainly still go and hold his own against younger opponents.
Finn hasn’t been on WWE programming a lot recently, mainly due to his honeymoon. This would be a great way to re-introduce him and to ensure a quality feud. Granted, Finn probably doesn’t need it, and putting two people with experience might not be the best use of the accumulated knowledge – it’s often better off paired with younger ‘greener’ talent – but it would be a really good match up, and one that would be enjoyed by many.
4. The Miz
Miz and Morrison have feuded in the past, so this would represent a very safe bet for WWE to go to. They’ve done this before, they’ve got previous, they know how to make the feud work. The two also went on to team together with success and this pairing is the reason that the artist formerly known as Johnny Mundo can call himself a five-time tag team champion.
The feud could be based on how their careers took divergent paths, almost like Julia Roberts’ Sliding Doors played out in the squared circle. Although WWE would be wise not to cover all of that storyline – they don’t tend to cover affair storylines well.
Morrison could be angry that whilst the Miz has been comfortable and had a main event at WrestleMania, he’s had to scratch and claw his way around the independent circuit; wrestling for the proverbial hot-dog and handshake. This weaving of reality into the story would give it gravitas but would necessitate either a turn of the Miz to being bad, or a lack of pathos toward the man who’s valiantly worked his way round the world trying to earn a crust. That said, the WWE crowd booed a man whose character was to champion the environment and highlight the problems with modern living, so I wouldn’t put it past them to boo Morrison in this scenario.
3. Rey Mysterio
Whilst Rey may be otherwise engaged looking after his WALTER look-alike son, when he comes back he could go against someone with whom he has a little bit of history. Rey and Morrison feuded when MNM took on Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio over the tag team straps. As much as I mentioned the experience of John and that although he’s getting older, he still seems quite sprightly , the same could be said about Rey.
A feud between these two would give John a lift as a singles competitor, when he’s been mainly used a tag-team star previously, and this could be a rivalry based on both of them trying to rage against the proverbial dying light. Only one can recapture their youth, and maybe they should use this as a chance to both reinvigorate their movesets and diversify. Rey does elements of this already, although this couldn’t be a first feud as John would have to re-establish his standard to any new audience members in order for him to try and update it. This could well lead into a B-show Pay-per-view match, with possible gold on the line should WWE want to go down this route.
2. Brian Kendrick
From one feuding tag team partner to another. Paul London and Brian Kendrick went up against MNM and waged war over the belts. Clearly, these two have good chemistry together and have that history to work with. If Johnny 205 Live does get to be a thing, this match-up would work well and it makes booking matches easy for WWE Creative.
The two are both experienced enough wrestlers that any match scenario would work, and both wrestlers have a range of tricks in their arsenal should underhanded tactics be required. According to Cagematch, the man of a thousand names would need to shift a couple of pounds to make weight in 205 Live (he’s listed as 211lb), but maybe pull Brian out of 205 and on to Raw, Smackdown or NXT. Also, if Mike Kanellis can be on 205 Live, I don’t see why Morrison cannot be included in it too. Maybe then they could do the wrestler having to be weighed in each week and fail to make weight for their title match, having to forfeit.
1. Daniel Bryan
Call me a cop-out should you wish, but this final pick would have one of the most talented wrestlers go against the former Johnny Mundo. Daniel Bryan has been incredibly versatile since returning from his neck injury, going from face GM of SmackDown, to man trying to save the planet as an eco-warrior and therefore a bad guy. Now he’s back as being a face since the former Bludgeon Brothers have reunited and Rowan lied to Bryan despite the faith that Daniel showed in him not to lie about the attack on Roman.
Putting Morrison against him would ensure great matches and would allow so many directions that they could take. Morrison is clearly versatile, if not for his ability to change his name on a dime should the mood take him. Daniel is also versatile as discussed above. For the two to feud, there would be a plethora of storylines that could be explored and that would be to the WWE Universe’s benefit. Potentially they could even work on something unique, which in today’s world is becoming increasingly difficult. A man can dream, certainly.
Whoever John Morrison ends up against, and whatever name he will have, we know one thing. The matches are sure to be good quality. Tell me, dear reader, who would you like to see him feud against?
