On October 24, 2020, during Impact Wrestling’s biggest event of the year, Josh Mathews revealed to the world that after much talk and speculation the Knockouts tag team championships will be returning. An eight-team tournament will begin this week on Impact Wrestling, the final two teams will be facing off at Hard To Kill on January 16, 2020, to decide the new Impact Knockouts Tag Team Champions.
Last Saturday during Turning Point on the Impact Plus app, the tournament graphic was revealed and along with the well-established members of the knockouts division. New faces will be making their debuts for Impact Wrestling as part of the upcoming tournament. So let’s take a look at the first-round matchups and who could come out as the overall winners;
The first match in the tournament will be between the very last minute and the makeshift team of Alisha Edwards and Tenille Dashwood who decided to team together during the Turning Point broadcast on the Impact plus app. Both Knockouts seem to have found a common ground as they both attempted to form a team with Jordynne Grace, both of which were ultimately unsuccessful.
They will be facing the very well established team of Havok and Neveah, also known as The Killer Death Machines. Havok and Neveah without a doubt seem to have an immediate advantage being an already an established team, but perhaps Lish and Dashwood could pull off a big upset in the tournament given how The Death Machines seem to have had a very mix bag of results since their reunion in Impact Wrestling?
The next match featured on in the bracket is one that left many Impact fans very happy as it includes the pairing of Killer Kelly and Renee Michelle. Two people who some have been saying are perfect fits in the Knockouts division, in particular Killer Kelly who is perhaps best known by the wider audience for her time in WWE. Where she competed in a triple threat on the first night of the 2018 United Kingdom Championship Tournament, she would also compete in the Mae Young Classic of the same year but would be eliminated in the first round. But of course, she has built up quite a reputation for herself on the independent circuit, most recently being defeated by Allysin Kay in Josh Barnett’s Blood Sport. This will be Kellys first time in Impact, the same can be said for her partner Renee Michelle who you may know from her recent appearances in WWE, as part of the storyline involving R Truth and her husband Drake Maverick but she is also a former participant in the Mae Young Classic but was also eliminated in the first round.
Their opponents as it stands will be Jordynne Grace and a mystery partner, after two failed attempts at forming a tag team with two knockouts. But because they didn’t work out that leaves Thicc Mama Pump without a partner for this tournament. This of course has left everyone wondering whether Jordynne has to go it alone or whether she could find a partner in time, but who? The person whose name keeps popping up is Lu Fisto, that fills Impact fans with the hope of seeing a Team PAWG reunion. But former knockouts tag team champions such as Brooke Adams and Taylor Wilde have also been rumoured, will Grace find a partner in time or will Killer Kelly and Renee Michelle surprise a lot of people and pick up a big win in their Impact debuts?
The next matchup will be between a team that many people as a favourite to win the entire tournament, Kiera Hogan and Tasha Steelz. Since forming a team earlier this year they quickly became a fan favourite and since the talk of the Knockouts tag team titles began to gain some momentum fans have been saying they are made for Tasha and Kiera. They will be squaring off against another team of debutantes in the Sea Stars aka Ashley Vox and Delmi Exo who are the current reigning Shimmer tag team champions. Most recently Vox has made several appearances for the NWA, so it was a surprise to many seeing the Sea Stars listed in the bracket for this tag team tournament. The Sea Stars will definitely put up a fight but perhaps the willingness to win by any means necessary could mean Steelz and Hogan come away with the win.
The final match-up scheduled for the first round will consist of the current knockouts champion Deonna Purrazzo and her curator Kimber Lee taking on the team of two former knockouts champions, Taya Valkyrie who is the longest-reigning knockouts champion and Rosemary. Lee and Purrazzo have said in the past that they fully intend on becoming tag team champions. Given that The Virtuosa is already a two-time knockouts champion, it’s clear she has the right mentality to become a double champion. But Taya and Rosemary are fully aware of what it takes to become champions and most recently they have picked up a few good wins in the tag team competition and have perhaps had more time working together as a tag team than Purrazzo and Lee. Could that advantage pay off for Ragnarok?
The Knockouts tag team championship tournament starts this Tuesday on Impact Wrestling on AXS TV, for fans in the UK you can watch it either on the Impact Plus App 2 am on Wednesday or 10pm Wednesday night on Free Sports TV.
