Rob Gronkowski Reportedly Signs With WWE | Wrestling News Update, March 11, 2020

With news on an NFL star heading to the WWE and an update on WrestleMania 36, Matty Deller brings you the Wrestling News Update.

ROB GRONKOWSKI SET TO SIGN WITH WWE

On WWE Backstage Tuesday night, Ryan Satin firstย reported that Gronkowski isย “deep in talks with WWE and close to finalizing a deal.” He went on to say that the former New England Patriot could be on next week’s SmackDown from New Orleans, LA, which has since been confirmed by The Wrap.

PWInsider have gone further, reporting that Gronkowski will be “an active pro wrestler” in a deal similar to Ronda Rousey’s WWE run. Gronkowski is friends with WWE’s Mojo Rawley and has appeared for WWE before, including getting involved in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal at WrestleMania 33 and helping Rawley win.

CITY OF TAMPA SAY WRESTLEMANIA IS STILL ON

The official Twitter account for the city of Tampa, Florida said WrestleMania 36ย is still planned to go on as scheduled. Tampa city officials are set to join Tampa Mayor Jane Castor on Thursday to discuss cancelling or postponing major events in the city due to the virus.

They responded to fan asking them about the event, saying;

“Hello, at this timeย @WrestleManiaย is still planned to proceed on schedule. Please contact theย @WWEย with questions about cancellations. The City is currently monitoring the spread of coronavirus and will work with venues as needed,”ย 

The World Health Organization announced today that the coronavirus outbreak is now a pandemic, meaning it is a threat to the whole world. There have been numerous changes to sporting events and large gatherings across the world, with some events and competitions moving forward without crowds, and some being nixed altogether, including South By Southwest and Coachella.

CM PUNK AND RHEA RIPLEY ON NEXT WEEK’S WWE BACKSTAGE

On last night’s WWE Backstage, they announced two big guests on next week’s show.

It wasย announced CM Punk will return to theย show’s panelย for next Tuesday’s episode.ย This will be his fifth appearance as an analyst.

In addition, NXT Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley will be the in-studio guest on Backstage next week.

WWE ANNOUNCE SOUTH AFRICA TRYOUTS

WWE has announced that their first-ever talent tryouts in South Africa will take place from Wednesday, April 29th through Saturday, May 2nd in Johannesburg.

In a press release, WWE Executive Vice President, Global Talent Strategy & Development Triple H said;

“South Africa is renowned for producing tough, uncompromising athletes proven by the hugely dominant performance of the Springboks rugby team last year to become world champions. I want to bring those same dynamic, powerful and entertaining qualities from South Africa’s best male and female athletes to WWE. My message to every athlete and performer in South Africa is simple: This is your chance to change your life. Take this opportunity to follow your dream and represent South Africa on the global stage as a WWE Superstar.”

TAKEOVER LADDER MATCH QUALIFIER ANNOUNCED FOR TONIGHT

A TakeOver: Tampa qualifying match has been added to the lineup for tonight’s NXT as Mia Yim and Dakota Kai will go one on one.

The winner of this match will earn a spot in the number one contender’s ladder match at NXT TakeOver: Tampa alongside Chelsea Green, who qualified by defeating Shotzi Blackheart last week.

Tonight’s episode of NXT is taking place at the WWE Performance Center.

NIA JAX REPORTEDLY CLOSE TO RETURN

PWInsiderย are reporting that former RAW Women’s Champion Nia Jax will be returning soon, and returning to SmackDown Live.

Furthermore, Jax is reportedly scheduled to be at this Friday’s SmackDown on FOX episode from the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan.

She underwent double knee surgery back on April 25th of last year and has tweeted about being ready to return, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

KENTA AND TOMOHIRO IISHI CONFIRMED FOR WAR OF THE WORLDS

Ring of Honorย announced todayย that KENTA and Tomohiro Ishii are set for all four shows on the War of the Worlds tour.ย There are the first New Japan Pro Wrestling talents to be confirmed for the shows.

The shows they will be a part of are:

  • Wednesday, May 6: Buffalo RiverWorks, Buffalo, New York
  • Thursday, May 7: Ted Reeve Arena, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
  • Saturday, May 9: Wings Event Center, Kalamazoo, Michigan
  • Sunday, May 10: The Odeum Expo Center, Villa Park, Illinois

KENTA is also set for ROH Supercard of Honor XIV on Saturday, April 4th in his first match for ROH since 2009. He will be teaming with Taiji Ishimori to face Jeff Cobb and Dan Maff.

PARTICIPANTS ANNOUNCED FOR GOTCH-ROBINSON CUP AT BLOODSPORT

Josh Barnett has announced the field of eight who will take part of the Gotch-Robinson Cup Tournament at Game Changer Wrestling’s Bloodsport III on April 2nd.

Former Big Japan Pro Wrestling Strong Heavyweight Champion, and a former Wrestle-1 and Zero1 World Heavyweight Champion Hideki Suzukiย wil lface one half of the former WWE tag team The Heartthrobs Thomas Santell.

The Gotch-Robinson cup will be a one-night, eight-man tournament where you win via submission or knockout.

The second match-up will see GCW and IGF talent Erik Hammer take on former amateur wrestler and MMA fighter Calder McColl.

Davey Boy Smith Jr will take on former Chikara and Beyond Wrestling star and BJJ specialist Matt Makowski and Jeff Cobb will face JR Kratos.
