Now, listen! This ain’t no make-believe!
John Morrison is back in WWE following months of rumours of him re-signing, despite coming out and disregarding the rumours himself.
Morrison was a prominent member of the WWE roster for seven years as a tag team wrestler and a singles star. After being called up from OVW, he started on Smackdown with Joey Mercury and Melina to form MNM, using his former ring name Johnny Nitro. They won the WWE Tag Team Championships on their debut match, winning them two more times until Morrison and Melina were ‘fired’ by Teddy Long after turning on Mercury.
Following their dismissal from Smackdown, they showed up on RAW with Morrison being pushed into the Intercontinental Title picture. He would eventually end up on ECW and would win the ECW World Championship within two weeks of his debut defeating CM Punk for the vacant title. It was at this point Nitro was dropped from his name and replaced with Morrison as well as a dysfunctional turned brilliant team was created alongside The Miz after Morrison lost the title to CM Punk. He would bounce back to Smackdown and RAW before departing the company in 2011 and moving onto Lucha Underground and Impact Wrestling.
The rumour mill is at large with where he will return to, with NXT as the largest possibility based on what fans would like to see. It’s a tough one to predict – he could easily slot into every brand under the WWE banner and would have an instant feud that fans would eat up. If he went to NXT, he could easily match up against Adam Cole and slot straight into their main event scene, as well as creating instant classics with the likes of Finn Balor, Matt Riddle, and Tommaso Ciampa.
If he was to return to Smackdown, I can see him being put into a program with former tag team partner, The Miz. I can see Morrison returning on Miz TV and either turning that into a 2019 version of The Dirt Sheet, or Morrison feuding with The Miz over who is better as they would be compared to Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty of The Rockers and which one was which.
Finally his return to RAW, where he could be inserted into both main event and midcard title pictures with him needing the United States Championship to complete a Grand Slam (depending on WWE and if they recognize the ECW World Championship as the primary championship needed). The banger of a match he could have against AJ Styles or Seth Rollins would potentially be a match of the year contender which makes me want him on RAW for those two alone.
I realistically would see him going to NXT out of all three brands. He is 40 years old as I write this and the reduced travel schedule would suit him and wouldn’t put a strain on his marriage to the current Impact Knockouts Champion, Taya Valkyrie. He could impart his knowledge and wisdom onto the stars of tomorrow as the older and more experienced competitor, alongside Finn Balor. The match quality would be at its highest if he was to return on NXT compared to Smackdown and RAW. The matches he had in Impact would be quite like the matches of NXT – some people would describe it as indie-riffic.
Comparing NXT and Impact, you can compare the environment; as they are both small and intimate venues, he knows how to maximize that smaller space and to create a better atmosphere for the fans and wrestlers he is competing against. He could also transition back into a tag team star and take a younger wrestler under his wing and guide them to glory with his experience. He has always been a brilliant face or heel – he can be loved or despised – but I really think he should return as a face and stay face for a decent amount of time, maybe turning heel a little later.
I personally think he would excel on all three brands as I mentioned earlier, the matches he could have would be fantastic, he would elevate every show he’s on, storyline dependant. I just hope WWE doesn’t try and duplicate his previous storylines from his past WWE run, and I really hope they don’t reunite him with The Miz, it would just feel weird to see them back together now that they are at the status they both are. Both are in the upper mid card situation, putting him in a main roster tag team will harm him, especially alongside someone with the status of The Miz. I’m personally extremely excited to see him back in WWE and can’t wait to see where he goes and what he does.
