Women’s World Championship Title History: 1891 – 1935

Today we will look at the complicated history of the Women’s World Championship between the years of 1891, with the first claimants of the title Josie Wahlfold and Alice Williams, all the way up to 1935 with Clara Mortensen being crowned the new champion and ushering in a new era of Women’s Professional Wrestling.

1891 – 1900

1891:  Josie Wahlford aka Minerva becomes the first official and widely recognised Women’s World Champion.  (as the National Police Gazette Women’s Champion)

Alice Williams def. Sadie Morgan at the Bastille of the Bowery to become Women’s World Champion (as Richard Kyle Fox’s Women’s Champion)

4th February 1891: Alice Williams holds the title at this time (Billed as the Greco-Roman lightweight champion)

29th April 1891: Alice Williams defended her title at the Kernan’s Theatre, Maryland against May Morgan in a best of three contest, spanning over two days.

19th April 1892: Alice Williams holds the title at this time in Louisville, Kentucky.

1900 – 1905

Before 1901: Alice Williams def. Josie Wahlford for the Women’s World Championship.

1901: Laura Bennett def. Alice Williams for the Women’s World Championship.

1905

1905: Celia Pontos def. May Vickers in Montreal, QC, Canada. (Billed as the Canadian Women’s Championship also known as the Lightweight Female Championship of the World)

1906

1906: Hazel Parker def Laura Bennett for the Women’s World Championship in Chicago, Illinois.  (Billed as the Featherweight Championship)

24th March 1906: Cora Livingston def. Hazel Parker for the Women’s World Championship.  (now known as the American Woman’s title and is Billed as Women’s Champion of the World)

15th August 1906: Lou Harris wins the Women’s World Championship.  (Cora Livingston is still being billed as Women’s Champion of the World)

1907: Mary Harris wins the Women’s World Championship.

1930: Virginia Mercereaur retires from wrestling as the Undisputed Women’s World Champion and moves to Newark, NJ, USA.

1932

1932: Clara Mortensen def. Barbra Ware for the vacant Women’s World Championship in Topeka, KS, USA. (dates are conflicting)

1933

19th January 1933: Betty Bushey wrestles Cora Livingston to a drawand begins claiming the Women’s World Championship and is recognised as such in Iowa, Nevada, Utah, and West Texas.

16th June 1933: Betty Bushey defends her Women’s World Championship in Spencer, IA, USA.

1935

1935: Cora Livingston would retire from professional wrestling still holding the belt.

21st March 1935: Mae Stein wins the Women’s World Championship in Knoxville, TN, USA.

8th November 1935: Betty Bushey defends her Women’s World Championship in Salt Lake City, UT, USA.

AN: it’s very important to note that many women held the title of Women’s World Champion during the early years of Women’s wrestling.  The first official physical belt recorded is in 1910 and that is called the Worlds Champion Female Wrestler, which was presented to Cora Livingston after defeating Laura Bennett.
