Wrestlers of the Week 2020 | First Quarter Wrestling Review

    First Quarter – 1st January 2020 to 10th April 2020

From the culmination of a phenomenal year in New Japan at WrestleKingdom 14 followed up by a new year and the retirement ceremony of Jushin Thunder Liger at New Years Dash in January, the world hasn’t quite been the same since.

With AEW: Revolution in February all the way to WWE and their two day WrestleMania event, which was changed at the last minute due to the COVID Global Pandemic, the first quarter of 2020 has been a rollercoaster of emotions and a strange time to navigate.

    1. Jon Moxley – 48

Jon Moxley has had an incredible start to the year, facing the likes of Lance Archer and Juice Robinson in the Tokyo dome at WrestleKingdom, winning back the IWGP United States Championship and later facing Minoru Suzuki.  Along with this Moxley faced and beat Chris Jericho for the AEW World Championship at Revolution on 29th February 2020.

    2. Kenny Omega – 42

Kenny Omega’s start to 2020 saw him, along with ‘Hangman’ Adam Page; retain the AEW Tag Team Championships on 29th February 2020 at the Revolution PPV against friends and rivals The Young Bucks.  The two would steadily begin to distance themselves from each other and their fellow members of The Elite, with Omega becoming more exasperated with Page and his growing alcohol problem.

Also having won the AAA Mega Championship off of Fenix the previous October, Omega would defend and retain the title against Sammy Guevara on 25th March episode of AEW: Dynamite.

    3. Asuka & Becky Lynch – 36

Asuka started off her year tag-teaming with Kairi Sane as The Kabuki Warriors, holding the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships which they won the previous October at Hell in a Cell, and unsuccessfully facing Raw Women’s Champion, Becky Lynch at the Royal Rumble in January of 2020.  She would demand a rematch on 3rd February during an episode of RAW and would go on to lose the match the following week.  She would go on to lose the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships, after a 181-day reign, at WrestleMania 36 to Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross.

Becky Lynch started the year as Raw Women’s Champion retaining the belt against Asuka on 26th January 2020 at the Royal Rumble and by the start of April had defeated and retained the title against Shayna Baszler at WrestleMania, her title reign surpassing the one-year mark a few days later.

    4. Tetsuya Naito – 33

Tetsuya Naito started his year by winning back the IWGP Intercontinental Championship off of Jay White on day one of Wrestle Kingdom 14 on 4th January in the Tokyo Dome, he would go on to become a double champion on night two defecting Kazuchika Okada in the main event, but before he could do his famous role call for Los Ingobernables de Japon he was attacked by KENTA. The two of them would put on a barn burner of a match at the new beginning in Osaka, defending both championships successfully. Naito was due to face Hiromu Takahashi at the New Japan Anniversary Show but this was cancelled, as where all New Japan events until the summer of 2020 due to the COVID Global Pandemic.

    5. Hiromu Takahashi & Shayna Baszler – 32

Hiromu Takahashi returned the previous November at Power Struggle ready to challenge Will Ospreay for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship at WrestleKingdom 14. He made his in-ring return against Robbie Eagles that December on the Road to Tokyo Dome events.

On 4th January at WrestleKingdom 14, Hiromu Takahashi would win back the title he never lost defeating Will Ospreay and making this his third reign with the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship.  The following night he would team up with Ryu Lee, formally known as Dragon Lee, to take on Jushin Thunder Liger and Naoki Sano in Liger’s retirement match, Takahashi would pin the junior heavyweight legend and vow to continue the legacy of the junior heavyweight division that Liger had started.

Shayna Baszler’s start to the year was one that was dominant and set her up as a woman not to be messed with.  At the start of the year, she would be awarded the Female Competitor Award in NXT and that same month enter the royal rumble at number 30, eliminating eight other competitors only losing out to Charlotte Flair who eliminated Baszler to win the match.  She made her main roster debut on 10th February attacking RAW Women’s Champion Becky Lynch making it clear that she wanted that belt, after a dominant performance in the Elimination Chamber Match she would go on to lose to Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 36 on 4th April.

    6. Will Ospreay – 31

Ospreay’s year didn’t get off to a good start, even though his matches where all instant classics he would lose his precious IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Championship to Hiromu Takahashi at WrestleKingdom 14 on 4th January 2020.

His transition into the heavyweight division was in a losing effort against Zack Sabre Jr. for the British Heavyweight Championship on 2nd February at The New Beginning in Sapporo event.  He would go on to win the belt off of ZSJ at RevPro’s High Stakes event, solidifying his move to becoming a heavyweight.

    7. Alexa Bliss – 29

Bliss entered the Royal Rumble on 26th January at number one, eliminating three competitors before Bianca Belair threw her over the top rope.  On the Road to WrestleMania Bliss and tag team partner, Nikki Cross would reignite their feud with The Kabuki Warriors and would go on to defeat them at WrestleMania 36 becoming two-time champions.

    8. Darby Allin – 28

Darby Allin started his year by competing in a four-man tournament at Bash at the Beach to see who would go on to face AEW World Champion Chris Jericho at Revolution; he would be defeated in the first round to PAC.  Soon after Allin began feuding with Sammy Guevara and would go on to defeat him at Revolution on 29th February.

    9. Bianca Belair – 26

Bianca Belair started the year winning a Women’s battle royal to earn a championship opportunity against Rhea Ripley at NXT TakeOver: Portland, that same month she would enter her first Royal Rumble at number 2, eliminating eight other women and then being thrown over the top rope by winner Charlotte Flair.  She would enter an intense feud with Charlotte Flair when she made her return to NXT to challenge Rhea Ripley for her title at WrestleMania 36. The two would face each other in late February on an episode of NXT only to lose to Flair and be injured after the match when Flair would take a metal chair to her ankle.

Belair would make her main roster debut at WrestleMania 36 to help The Street Profits, which includes her Husband Montez Ford, when they were attacked by Angle Garza, Austin Theory, and Zelina Vega.  The three of them would face Vega’s team in a six-person tag team match with Belair and The Street Profits being victorious.

    10. Rhea Ripley – 25

Rhea Ripley entered the year as NXT Women’s Champion, defeating Shayna Baszler on 18th December 2019 becoming the first woman to hold both NXT & NXT UK Women’s Championships and would successfully defend the title against Toni Storm at Worlds Collide on 25th January.  Rhea Ripley challenged Charlotte Flair to use her opportunity at a title match against her, as Flair had never beaten her.  Flair would come to NXT accepting her challenge and entering an intense feud with both Ripley and Belair.  On the second night of WrestleMania 36, Ripley would lose the title to Charlotte Flair in an outstanding match.
