WWE NXT comes at us live from the Capitol Wrestling Center, With all the fallout from TakeOver: Stand & Deliver.
Welcome to a new era in NXT! Not only is it the true era of Karrion Kross, but now NXT is on Tuesday nights!
We began the show with the entrance of Scarlett and the new NXT Champion. Once Scarlett handed Kross the microphone, he told the NXT Universe that time always comes full circle. It was only a matter of time he was back in this ring with the title, his title. Then he addressed Finn Balor and said he was without a doubt one of the best to ever step foot in the ring.
Unfortunately for Balor he didn’t understand that anything can be a driving force when you learn to control it. Now that time has corrected itself, Kross is in command of NXT til he says so. No one is going to out work him, out train him, or out wrestle him. Even with the hungriest guys in the locker room, Kross is starving. He doesn’t care who you are or where you’ve been, he will take everyone out until there is no one left. Fall and Pray.
After Kross and Scarlett left the ring, we took a look back at Stand & Deliver (even though they began to show us highlights from Mania). Then we were told we would hear from the new NXT Women’s Champion later tonight.
MSK made their entrance to the ring with their newly won NXT Tag Team Champions. After their entrance we took a commercial break.
Returning from commercial break, Killian Dain and Drake Maverick made their entrance to the ring.
MSK defeated Drake Maverick and Killian Dain to retain the NXT Tag Team Championships
Dain and Maverick began the match in control thanks in part to Dain starting the match. When Maverick got in the match he was able to make a cover, but only got a two count. It was a good first title defense for the champs. They got pushed, but were able to hold their own and take out Dain to focus on Maverick.
After the match as Dain was checking on Maverick, Alexander Wolfe appeared in the ring. Dain seemed confused at his presence and was attacked from behind by Marcel Barthel and Fabian Aichner when he tried to question Wolfe. After beating down Dain, the three Imperium members stood tall in the ring.
We then saw footage from earlier in the day of Robert Stone and Aliyah. Stone said he was going to go to William Regal’s office and get Aliyah and Jessi Kamea the title shot they deserve. That is until Mercedes Martinez stopped them in their tracks looking for her money. She actually choked Aliyah until Jessi Kamea came up and stopped her! Kamea said she didn’t want to just step up to Martinez, but step on her. Martinez said she would see her later tonight.
Then to commercial break we went!
Returning from break it was time to take a look back at the Unsanctioned Match between Kyle O’Reilly and Adam Cole. We saw highlights from the match and then saw footage of both men being taken to the hospital by ambulance. The men were brought into the hospital at the same time, with Cole yelling at KOR the whole time.
Mercedes Martinez defeated Jessi Kamea via Pinfall (DVD)
Kamea made a valiant effort to get one over on Martinez, but it didn’t quite work as planned. She got in good offense in the beginning of the match, including a nice drop kick that ended up with Martinez in the corner. After a missed crossbody, Martinez hit Kamea with a huge knee.
Robert Stone and Aliyah tried to make an escape after the match, but Stone was stopped by Martinez. Martinez got her money and then went to the commentary table. She had a message for Raquel Gonzalez: “Congratulations champ! Here’s a warning, I’m coming for you!”
Then we went backstage where McKenzie Mitchell was interviewing The Way. Johnny Gargano called their eight man tag match tonight cuckoo bananas. But it also is the first time all four members of The Way will be in a match together. Austin Theory said the games with Dexter Lumis are over and he gets his revenge tonight.
Speaking of revenge, Candice LeRae said Shotzi Blackheart and Ember Moon got lucky at TakeOver. Tonight though they will handle business. Indi Hartwell said she just hoped she ended up in the ring with Dexter Lumis. After a look, Gargano brought everyone in for a little The Way cheer.
Before a commercial break we saw NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar. His open challenge match would be next.
Returning from commercial we saw Isaiah ‘Swerve’ Scott in some sort of recording studio. He said he had a star making performance at TakeOver. Tonight though it is time for Swerve to move on and he can’t did that without taking care of Leon Ruff.
At ringside Legado del Fantasma made their entrance. Escoabar said a few words about his historic ladder match. Now as the undisputed champion he is a warrior. Then he laid out the open challenge and KUSHIDA ANSWERED!
Kushida defeated Santos Escobar via Pinfall to become THE NEW CRUISERWEIGHT CHAMPION
Before the bell Kushida hit a drop kick on Escobar, which Escobar tried to laugh off on the outside of the ring. Once the bell finally rung, Kushida tried to go for the Hoverboard Lock. Escobar got to the outside of the ring and while Kushida looked like he was going to go for a dive, stopped himself and paid homage to Justin Thunder Liger instead. Then we went to picture in picture.
While in picture in picture, Escobar got the upper hand by throwing Kushida into the barricades and using the ring post to his advantage. When we came back from picture in picture, things did not change for Kushida and we even got some commentary on the match from Escobar. Well at least him yelling at Kushida about him having nerve to ruin his celebration.
Kushida was put through a lot in this one, including a Boston Crab like submission on the steel steps putting his throat against the ring post. Even with that, Kushida found a way to pull through. He was able to counter the Phantom Driver into a pin for the win!
After the match Escobar was shocked! Kushida on the other hand was absolutely thrilled and hugging his newly won championship!
Then we went backstage to see Tommaso Ciampa and Timothy Thatcher. Ciampa said life has a way of testing us. Their strength as a team was tested in the Dusty Classic. Imperium and Walter tested their will and loyalty. They may not have won every fight, but they have passed every test. Now on the other side they have come out stronger as a unit, ready to face a new NXT.
Thatcher said their are new champions in NXT and the path they will pick? Well they finish what they start. Ciampa warned MSK that they are coming.
Before going to commercial break we saw Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai.
When we returned from break William Regal was congratulating Kushida on his victory when Jordan Devlin interrupted. Devlin congratulated the new champ and listed off some of his former accomplishments. Then Devlin questioned why Kushida would think he is the man, when Devlin is there. He said Kushida is lucky because he has to go home now, but told him to keep the title for a while. He’s apparently coming back for the title.
When Devlin walked away, Kushida looked and Regal and told him anytime.
Back in the ring Dakota Kai introduced the new NXT Women’s Champion to the ring. Gonzalez told the story of how she didn’t get her big debut a year and a half ago when NXT went live. She wasn’t ready then, but made a promise to herself to never let that happen again. She went home trained more and worked harder, now she is the champion.
Gonzalez then gave recognition to Dakota Kai. She said without Kai she doesn’t debut at NXT Portland or become the first NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions. Kai said for 14 months they dominated the best women’s division in the world. Gonzalez then gave all her respect to Io Shirai for being a great champion, but the Raquel Gonzalez era has official begun.
Then the lights went out and Franky Monet (FKA Taya Valkyrie) came out! Franky congratulated the champ and said she was out there to formally introduce herself. She said she was WERA LOCA! The best division on the planet is now a bit shinier, a bit more bougie, and a whole lot better. But with Gonzalez at the top of the division, Franky warned she would be seeing a lot more of her.
Gonzalez told her she is lucky she is in such a good mood tonight. If Franky ever interrupts her again, she said she would shove her puppy straight up her culo. Franky walked out of the ring, but told the champ she would see her ever single Tuesday.
Then, RHEA RIPLEY’S MUSIC HIT! Ripley took a little time to take in the NXT Universe before getting in the ring. After a bit of a stare down, Gonzalez and Ripley smiled at each other and clinked their titles.
The interruptions certainly weren’t done as BIANCA BELAIR ARRIVED! A photo of the three women from a few years ago was shown on the tron, as all three women held up their championships. The three women embraced and took in the chants of NXT. (Dang did this have me a bit emotional.)
Backstage we then saw Pete Dunne. The Brusierweight said he out classed Kushida last week. It isn’t just talk, he is the best technical wrestler in the world. If anyone disagrees they are welcome to step up and try to prove him wrong. In the mean time though, it is time for Dunne to get focused on why he came back to NXT: Championship Gold.
Then a commercial break!
Returning from break we got a video about the signing of Sarray. Sarray will have her first match on NXT next week! Regal was then interviewed about the signing. He said it took them a few years to get it done, but he is so excited to have Sarray apart of NXT. He apologized and said he had some business to attend to.
In his office waiting for him was Roderick Strong and Marina Shafir. An emotional looking Strong handed Regal an envelope, simply saying he was done. Regal asked if he was sure and then told him while sometimes it was trying dealing with him in the UE, he is the ultimate professional. Then he told Roddy he is welcome back anytime.
Isaiah ‘Swerve’ Scott defeated Leon Ruff via Pinfall (JML Driver)
A brawl here folks. There really is no love loss between these two. Scott went to the commercial break in full control of the match up. When Scott had Ruff in the corner, after a few chops, he told him they are done from here on out. This though seemed to spark something in Ruff. He came out of the corner with a series of clotheslines. Ruff was able to hit a huge cutter that had Scott rolling to the outside.
Then Ruff hit a flip to the outside and rolled Scott back in for a pin attempt. The two just know each other really well. It was a really good match to check out.
After the match we saw Zoey Stark get interviewed by McKenzie Mitchell. Stark said after struggling to make ends meat a few months ago, she’s feeling fantastic. Now her ultimate goal is the NXT Women’s Championship.
Enter in Mercedes Martinez. She said everyone knows she is next in line and not some rookie. Then we took a commercial break.
Bronson Reed, Shotzi Blackheart, Ember Moon, and Dexter Lumis defeated The Way via Pinfall (Tsunami on Theory)
At least one member of The Way left happy tonight. Indi Hartwell got taken away by Dexter Lumis, all because she acted like she had been injured. Throughout the match Lumis did get a bit distracted by Hartwell. We also saw Reed use Blackheart as a weapon, which is always kinda fun to see. LeRae tried to go for a suplex of sorts on Reed, which definitely did not work out.
