How will Adam Cole react to Pat McAfee’s actions from last week? And who will be the next competitor in the ladder match at TakeOver XXX (30)?
We began the show with a recap of what happened last week between Adam Cole and Pat McAfee. We also got reminded of the destruction Karrion Kross caused last week.
Karrion Kross defeated Danny Burch via Submission (Kross Jacket)
Burch was off to a hot start right away, but Kross proved to be a bit too much. Burch did bring a hell of a fight to Kross, probably the toughest opponent Kross has seen to date, but once the Kross Jacket was locked in…that was it.
After the match, Keith Lee made his way to the ring. Once Lee entered the ring, Kross and Scarlett don’t stick around for long. Lee said that Kross likes to blame him for things, but every time the offer has been there for Kross to join him in the ring, Kross runs. Because of this, Lee went to William Regal.
The NXT Champion said he begged Regal and promised no to lay a hand on Kross until TakeOver 30. Lee held up a contract and said Regal and his names were both on it….all it needs is Kross’ signature. Scarlett grabbed the contract and brought it to Kross.
After he signed the contract, Scarlett brought it back to the ring and slid it over to Lee, but not before giving the contract a (weird) kiss. When the NXT Champion opened the contract, a fire ball somehow came out from it and blinded Lee. Medics and referees attempted to help Lee, but all the Champ wanted was to find Kross.
Cameras follow Lee backstage where the medics attempted to get him to an ambulance. While this was happening, Drake Maverick and Killian Dain made their respective entrances for our first match.
Drake Maverick versus Killian Dain ended in a no contest
We began this match with picture in picture, as NXT cameras were still following Keith Lee. In what we were seeing of the match, Maverick was doing a good job using his quickness against the much bigger Dain. Dain did gain control for a bit, but Maverick took out his legs in order to get back in the match.
After we saw the ambulance take Keith Lee away, the Undisputed Era pulled up.
While Maverick looked to capitalize from a top rope elbow, The Undisputed Era attacked! Thus the match was over.
Once UE got rid of Dain and Maverick, Adam Cole got the mic. He said he knew Pat McAfee was watching and told him to listen up. Cole yelled about how McAfee wants to come into his world and play wrestler, about how he runs his mouth on Twitter, but he isn’t special.
McAfee kicked him when his arms were behind his back and Cole isn’t impressed. Now at TakeOver 30, McAfee has to step into the ring with the longest reigning NXT Champion. Then Cole challenged McAfee to show up to NXT next week, so Cole could look him in the eyes and tell him he is gonna kick his ass.
A recap of Legado del Fantasma kidnapping Fandango was shown before heading to commercial.
Back from break, we heard from Kushida about the opportunity to win his first NXT championship.
Santos Escobar defeated Tyler Breeze via Pinfall (Phantom Driver)
We saw a very angry Breeze in this one, but unfortunately for Breeze, his anger did not translate to a victory. The NXT Cruiserweight Champion is a tough opponent. Breeze fought hard and looked to have the match in control, but Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde made sure to change all that.
After the match Fandango, who had his injured arm in a sling, made his way to the ring. Dango had some sort of stick with him to use as a weapon, but with his injury and Breeze already down, the numbers game got to him pretty quick.
Before Legado del Fantasma could do any real damage, Isaiah Swerve Scott made the save.
Then we went to a video package of Dakota Kai. In it Kai said she has figured out how to beat Io Shirai and take her down from the pedestal everyone else has put her on. Kai said she is in Io’s head and that she has done everything on her own to get to this point.
Back from another commercial break, Ridge Holland talked about his debut match last week. His second chance match is against Johnny Gargano.
Before her match, McKenzie Mitchell caught up with Mia Yim. Yim said that from what she knows Keith Lee is going to be okay and there wasn’t serious damage.
Mia Yim defeated Indi Hartwell via Submission (Head Scissors Armbar)
Hartwell put in another solid performance on NXT. She tried to use Yim’s emotions to her advantage, but Yim used her experience to keep her focus.
After the match, we heard from Finn Balor on his second chance opportunity.
Before going to another commercial, we saw Bronson Reed and Damian Priest preparing for their match.
Back from commercials, we find out Pat McAfee will be at NXT next week.
Bronson Reed defeated Damian Priest via Pinfall (Jackknife Cover)
Priest seemed pretty confident that he would be walking out of this one the victor. It was a hard hitting affair between the two, a hoss fight if you will. In the end, NXT’s resident Thicc Boi continues his winning ways heading to TakeOver.
A video from Io Shirai is shown. Shirai said that Dakota Kai is no match for her. In fact Shirai didn’t even know who Kai was, just that she was Candice LeRae and Tegan Nox’s friend. She also said that Kai is not in her head, but that she is just pissed off.
Back from a break and ready for women’s tag team action. Before the match can begin, Robert Stone tried to get Kacy Catanzaro to join the Robert Stone Brand. Stone said that Kacy is hanging out with all the wrong people. He told her to lose the loser, meaning Kayden Carter.
Mercedes Martinez and Aliyah defeated Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter via Pinfall (Air Raid Crash)
Kacy and Kayden started off really well and with some excellent team work. As the match went on, the Robert Stone Brand made quick tags and even had a neckbreaker/wheelbarrow tandem move work out well.
After the match, Rhea Ripley’s music hit. With what happened last week, Ripley had unfinished business with the Robert Stone Brand and specifically Mercedes Martinez.
It seemed like Martinez was going to deal with Ripley on her own when Aliyah and Stone jumped out of the ring, but it didn’t stay that way for long. When Ripley was taken down by the numbers game, Shotzi Blackheart made the save for the former NXT Women’s Champion.
Then we went to dinner at the Garganos! Er, well more like story time at the Garganos this week. Candice is reading a fairytale to their dog, Pawdme. Then the gimmicky, weird lighting thing happens where she talks directly to the camera. Candice said that she is not evil and told Tegan Nox to mind her own business.
Then Johnny Gargano said the Wednesday Knight will ride in and save the kingdom. He reminds us in the gimmicky thing, that you can’t have TakeOver without Johnny TakeOver and promises to win and become a two time North American Champion.
Back from break to the Thatch as Thatch Can school of wrestling. He taught the students on the importance of learning to adapt.
Cameron Grimes defeated Kushida and Velveteen Dream via Pinfall (Cave In)
It certainly was a surprise to see Velveteen Dream be the third competitor in this match. The three men put on a competitive match and alliances seem to form, albeit for very short moments. It looked like Kushida was going to be the one to move on to TakeOver, as he locked in a few good submissions, but Grimes was ever the opportunist.
After his loss, Dream attacked Kushida. He was acting completely different from the Velveteen Dream we have known in the past.
We ended NXT with Finn Balor and Velveteen Dream in a stare down.
