Following the shocking events of TakeOver: Portland, what does Johnny Gargano have to say for himself?
The show opened with Adam Cole cutting a promo where he said “I told you so” after successfully defending his NXT Championship. Cole handed over the microphone to Roderick Strong who addressed his match against Velveteen Dream later in the night. He was quickly interrupted by a voiceover by Dream as the arena was illuminated by purple mood lighting.
NXT Cruiserweight Championship: Jordan Devlin (c) defeated Lio Rush via pinfall
Devlin took control of the match early on and stayed on top with his strikes. After turning the tables, Rush hit Devlin with a huge avalanche poisonrana followed by a Come Up and nearly reclaimed the Cruiserweight title but Devlin got his foot on the rope. The crowd were in full support for Rush, whilst Devlin leaned more into his heel role.
Raquel Gonzalez explained her actions at TakeOver: Portland. She said that she knew how Dakota Kai felt when being overlooked, and that that’s why she decided to help. Kai said, Gonzalez had her back like no one else. William Regal then walked in and announced that Dakota Kai will face Tegan Nox in a steel cage match in two weeks, where there will be no outside interruption.
Austin Theory came out for a match, but was followed out by Tommaso Ciampa who addressed TakeOver: Portland. He couldn’t believe he was blindsided by Johnny Gargano’s betrayal. In order for Ciampa to get back to where he believes he should be, he says there cannot be a Johnny Gargano in NXT. Ciampa laid out Theory and repeatedly threw him into the barricades.
Grizzled Young Veterans (Zack Gibson & James Drake) defeated Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde via pinfall (Ticket to Mayhem)
Gibson and Drake hit Mendoza with a Ticket to Mayhem and pinned him for the win. After the match, Gibson got on the mic and said that they aren’t in the “land of the free”, but are instead in “the land of neckbeards”. GYV are soon to takeover the WORLD,
We then see the brand new NXT Tag Team Champions in the ring. The Full Sail crowd is thrilled to see them. Once the crowd calms down a bit, Matt Riddle asks where the Brosermobile has gone. Pete Dunne reminds him that Riddle got their ride impounded! RIP to the cool golf cart.
While they may have lost their ride, Dunne says it doesn’t matter because they left Portland with the tag titles. Riddle says that he partied hard in Portland, even says Pete did too! Unfortunately the Broserweights weren’t the only ones to party hard…the Dusty Classic Trophy partied a bit too hard. The Trophy failed the wellness policy!
Their opponents for the night, Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan interrupted the fun. Guess they were ready to fight.
Broserweights defeated Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan via Pinfall (Riddle End)
The Broserweights are just really fun and work well together. Burch and Lorcan are also a fantastic team, so this was a hard hitting and fun match to watch. The teams went back and forth for a bit, but of course the new champs prevailed.
Backstage we see Roderick Strong letting his Undisputed Era members know that he wants them to stay behind for his match with Velveteen Dream. UE seems to be okay with the choice.
After a commercial, we come back to the Forgotten Sons. They have not received what the Grizzled Young Vets were saying earlier in the night. They are coming for GYV.
We see a recap of Keith Lee’s WWE Backstage appearance. Lee is in the ring with a mic, but never gets to speak as Kona Reeves interrupts. Reeves doesn’t get time to do much of anything as Lee hit him with a pounce right away.
Keith Lee defeated Kona Reeves via Pinfall (Big Catastrophe)
I mean Kona really had no chance here, right? The North American Champ proved here interrupting him isn’t the best choice.
Dominik Dijakovic joined Lee in the ring after the conclusion of the match. Dijakovic just isn’t ready to let go of their feud. He is positive that he had Lee beat at TakeOver and says Lee knows it.
Keith Lee on the other hand, believed Dijakovic was just making up excuses for his loss. Always up for a fight, Lee tells Dijakovic that if he can get Regal on board, they can continue to fight forever.
Chelsea Green defeated Kayden Carter via Pinfall (Unprettier)
Well, the rebranding of the Robert Stone Brand seemed to go well. Green did exactly what Stone said she would, even with an interruption by Bianca Belair, Green still pulled off the victory.
That interruption by Belair? Well she basically pulled a Kanye West! During the middle of the match, Belair rolled into the ring and called out Charlotte Flair. She told Flair that when she finds her, she is going to whoop her. Once Belair handled her business she left, things just keep getting interesting in the NXT Women’s division.
Velveteen Dream defeated Roderick Strong via Pinfall (Dream Valley Driver)
Did the Undisputed Era listen to Roddy? Of Course not! But this didn’t deter Dream in the slightest, as he wound up taken them all out and securing the victory. If you were wondering, yes Dream did have Marina’s face on his gear tonight.
Unfortunately for Dream his night didn’t end on a happy note. We closed NXT with the Undisputed Era standing tall over him after they took him out.
