This week’s episode saw a plethora of high-stake matches as Worlds Collide and TakeOver: Portland edge closer and closer.
Keith Lee cut an in-ring promo to open the show, where he challenged Roderick Strong and called The Undisputed Era “limited”. Just as he vowed to win the NXT North American Championship next week, Lee was interrupted by The Undisputed Era. As Adam Cole spoke, the rest of the faction surrounded Lee and subsequently attacked him. Strong hit Lee with a chair and trapped his ankle in the chair. Tommaso Ciampa ran out to help Lee, and The Undisputed Era left the scene.
Finn Balor vs. Johnny Gargano was made official for NXT TakeOver: Portland.
Tegan Nox was giving an interview outside, where Candice LeRae ran towards her with a big hug.
Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic: Matt Riddle & Pete Dunne defeated Flash Morgan Webster & Mark Andrews via pinfall
Riddle pinned Webster for the win. This was a sensational match. It was high-octane right from the start, and South Wales Subculture came out looking great. Dunne and Andrews have excellent in-ring chemistry and Webster made a great impression on NXT.
Tommaso Ciampa came down to the ring following the events that unfolded earlier on. He said that it is clear that The Undisputed Era have a hit list, and that so does he. Adam Cole is at the top of Ciampa’s list, and he wants Goldie back. Once again, The Undisputed Era ran out to attack Ciampa, but he was saved by Johnny Gargano. The crowd chanted for DIY as the team reunited.
Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic: Grizzled Young Veterans (Zack Gibson & James Drake) defeated Kushida & Alex Shelley via pinfall
James Drake pinned the debuting Alex Shelley after he and Gibson hit him with a monstrous Ticket to Mayhem. After their loss, Kushida and Shelley offered a handshake, but Gibson and Drake declined and cut a promo calling the Time Splitters a “tag team of the past” before vowing to win the Dusty Classic.
Robert Stone explained to the press that he had pulled Chelsea Green from the NXT Women’s Championship number one contender battle royal, stating that Green is “too hot a star” for a battle royal. They then drove away.
Finn Balor examined a video of Ilja Dragunov ahead of their match at Worlds Collide.
Isaiah “Swerve” Scott defeated Tyler Breeze and Lio Rush in a triple threat match
Scott pinned Breeze after hitting a menacing package driver to cement his position in the NXT Cruiserweight Championship four-way match at Worlds Collide. The remaining two spots will be taken up by NXT UK superstars. Reigning champion Angel Garza was on commentary throughout this match.
Cathy Kelley was interviewing Johnny Gargano when Tommaso Ciampa joined him. Gargano asked Ciampa about teaming up “for old time’s sake” in light of Trent Seven’s tweet earlier in the night. The Undisputed Era tried to ambush them but they were stopped by security. Keith Lee then appeared out of nowhere and attacked the security. He speared one through a bush and threw another onto a car bonnet.
Moustache Mountain vs. DIY was made official for Worlds Collide.
Bianca Belair won the NXT Women’s Championship Number One Contender Battle Royal
The most notable names in this match were the returning Kacy Catanzaro and Mercedes Martinez, the latter of whom faced off against former champion Shayna Baszler, teasing a match between the two down the line.
Other named included Bianca Belair, Mia Yim, Io Shirai, Santana Garrett, Xia Li, Vanessa Borne, Kayden Carter, Catalina, Jessi Kamae, MJ Jenkins and Shotzi Blackheart. Blackheart would go on to eliminate Baszler out of nowhere. Xia Li also had a very impressive showing.
Dakota Kai, who was conspicuous by her absence in the match, caused Tegan Nox to be eliminated when Nox climbed to the top rope. Kai then walked away.
Belair eliminated Io Shirai at the end with a KOD out of the ring.
Next week’s NXT sees the go-home episode before Worlds Collide. NXT UK also tapes new episodes this weekend in York, one of which will air next week before Worlds Collide.
