Tonight sees two big championship matches, as Breezango defends against Imperium and Damian Priest defends against Timothy Thatcher.
NXT opened with a recap of what happened last week. Then Vic Joesph welcomed us to the show.
Io Shirai defeated Shotzi Blackheart via Pinfall (Moonsault)
Shotzi attempted a show of sportsmanship at the beginning of the match, but Io wasn’t having it. The women that went to showing the other up in a series of pin attempts. Commentary could not have been more impressed with Shotzi and rightfully so, she brought the fight to Io. An excellent opening match by these two women.
After an amazing match, the NXT Women’s Champion helped up Shotzi and a huge sign of respect.
Then a hype video of Tommaso Ciampa was shown. It featured highlights of his return match against Jake Atlas. Then we went to commercial.
Upon returning from commercial we were informed that there will be a battle royal to determine the new number one contender to the NXT Women’s Championship.
Tommaso Ciampa defeated Desmond Troy via Pinfall (Willow’s Bell)
Ciampa is back with a vengeance. While Troy tried his best, Ciampa was just too dangerous and aggressive.
After the match Ciampa looked to inflict more pain on Troy, but was stopped by Jake Atlas appearing on the entrance ramp. Atlas said that he could have jumped Ciampa from behind, but that isn’t the kind of person he is. He said he isn’t a coward. While he knows just how dangerous Ciampa can be, Atlas challenged him to a match next week. Ciampa just grinned and seemed to agree to the match.
Then we saw the arrival of Drake Maverick from earlier in the day. Maverick was asked about his tag team match tonight. He said the game plan is to take care of business as a team with Killian Dain. He seemed a little skeptical, but tried to convince the interviewer that things would be fine.
Before commercial break, we are informed we will hear from the new NXT Champion, Finn Balor when we return.
After commercial, we were greeted by Finn Balor. Balor said that while Adam Cole is undisputed, there is only one Prince. He then said that he has been getting a lot of questions. How is NXT different then four years ago? How will this reign be different from his first?
Balor said the last time he was champion he was building the brand, but now? The brand needs him more than he needs the brand. Finn Balor being the NXT Champion makes it the most important title in the game. He said he has been fighting for 20 years to be champion and now it is time for people to start fighting to face him. He gave the locker room a piece of advice: “look both ways before crossing the Prince.”
After hearing from Balor, we got the entrance of Austin Theory. Theory got a mic and said he is a future first ballot hall of famer. His loss to Bronson Reed was a fluke and he’ll prove it. Theory then gave an open challenge to the locker room, answered by….. KUSHIDA!
Kushida defeated Austin Theory via Submission (Hoverboard Lock)
This new aggressive side to Kushida is intense. He answered the open challenge and immediately went at Theory. Theory’s cockiness didn’t help him as Kushida just brought kick after kick. A mishap on the outside for Theory, a missed forearm which ended with Theory hitting the ring post, seemed to be the downfall. Kushida didn’t let up on the injured arm.
After the match, Kushida wouldn’t break the hold. Then we went to yet another commercial break.
Returning from break, we headed to the Gargano household. Candice LeRae was not happy with how last week went with Tegan Nox. LeRae said she has changed for the better and that she offered Nox the chance of a lifetime. Johnny Gargano interrupted and said they were repaid by Nox breaking their TV! Apparently Johnny hasn’t gone downstairs in a week because there is still spaghetti all over and ya know the broken TV.
LeRae suggested buying a new TV, which Johnny agreed to and said he would be sending Nox the bill. With the TV situation out of the way, for now, LeRae talked about how she would be winning the battle royal next week. Then Johnny said he bought the new tv and took a crack at the North American Championship match occurring later.
Breezango defeated Imperium via Pinfall to retain the NXT Tag Team Championships
As Wade Barrett put it at the beginning of the match, it was a mugging by Imperium…at least for a bit. The Tag Team Champs though would not let go of the championships they have worked so hard to get for five years. Fandango took a hell of a beating for most of the match, but once Tyler Breeze finally got in the match things picked up for Breezango.
Imperium were set up for the European Bomb, but Fandango drop kicked Breeze into Marcel, which then led to the pinning combination!
A promo for the return of NXT UK was shown before the next commercial break.
Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter defeated Jessi Kamea and Xia Li via Pinfall
Both teams had an opportunity in this match to make some noise in the tag team division. Kacy and Kayden had a bit of an advantage in the chemistry department as they have been a team longer. Although Xia and Jessi tried to get the teamwork together, Kacy and Kayden put together a unique pin to get the victory!
After the match Kacy and Kayden offered handshakes, but Xia Li wanted no part of it.
Backstage Drake Maverick finally ran into Killian Dain. Dain apparently wasn’t informed of their tag team match. He told Maverick that he wasn’t his friend or tag team partner and if he was going to the ring, he was going alone.
Then we went to commercial.
Returning from commercial we got a Connor’s Cure video.
Then we got a promo from Tegan Nox. Nox told LeRae that she knows she hasn’t changed, but if that’s what LeRae needs to tell herself to go on ahead. The Candice LeRae that she knew wouldn’t listen to her husband’s complaints about a $200 TV just so he could watch himself lose every week.
Nox said she just wanted her friend back, while LeRae wanted a lackey. She said that next week she will be the one winning the battle royal, not LeRae. Nox then gave a warning to Io Shirai that when they meet again it would end differently.
Drake Maverick and Killian Dain defeated Undisputed Era via DQ
Maverick had a lot of hope going into this match that Dain would show up and be his partner, but that wasn’t necessarily the case. Maverick had to go it alone for most of this match while Dain watched from backstage. William Regal was the one who got Dain to leave backstage and enter the match.
Dain threw Maverick back in the ring and told him if he was going to lose, to lose as a man. Undisputed Era didn’t just let Dain leave though. Bobby Fish brought a chair into play because Dain was beating UE up so bad.
Maverick was excited because he finally thought a team was formed between him and Dain. Unfortunately his excitement got him another punch to the face.
An interviewer caught up with Jake Atlas as he was leaving Full Sail. Atlas said the challenge he laid out to Ciampa was bold, but a fire has been lit in him. As he was talking Ciampa attacked him. Kyle O’Rielly was one who came to put a stop to the attack. Kyle yelled at Ciampa that it was a parking lot, they have a match next week and to save it.
Ciampa said he’d see both men next week. Then we went to break.
Returning from break, Regal informed us there will be a Gauntlet Eliminator Match to determine the new number one contender to the NXT Championship.
Damian Priest defeated Timothy Thatcher via Pinfall (Reckoning)
Priest was able to withstand Thatcher’s vicious strikes to retain his North American Championship. The match between the two men was hard hitting, but in the end Thatcher’s studying of Priest’s wrestling didn’t help him gain NXT gold.
